62Larry Munson
Larry Munson, famous play by play announcer for the Georgia Bulldogs died Sunday night, Nov 20, after suffering from a severe respiratory infection that led to Pneumonia.
I did not attend UGA but for as many sister's and friends that did I might as well have. I know he will be missed.
In his college days he was well into Jazz and actually played with a well known jazz group in Hoboken NJ.
Mr Munson was known for his love for the Bulldogs as he worked as an announcer across the airways even before football was televised. Some say they preferred to turn the TV down just to listen to his commentary on the games.
He was said to be Georgia's most distinctive voice for 42 years from 1966 to 2008.
Born in Minneapolis in on Sept 28,1922. As a high school graduate he enrolled in Morehead State teaching College in Moorhead Minn. After serving WWII hr he enrolled in broadcast school back in his home town of Minneapolis.
His broadcasting career was launched soon after. In 1994 he was inducted into the Georgia's Association of Broadcaster's hall of fame.
Similarly in 2009 he was inducted into the National Sportswriters and Sportcaster's Hall or Fame.
His relationship with the Georgia fans did not come over night but was certainly helped in 1973 when Georgia was pitted to lose against the Tennessee Volunteers. Georgia won to the volunteers 35 to 31. Munger was heard saying " “My God, Georgia has just beaten Tennessee in Knoxville!!!!” AJC*
The Georgia Mascott
"As we prepare for another meeting between the hedges," Munson's voice reminds them, "let all the Bulldog faithful rally behind the men who now wear the red and black with two words, two simple words which express the sentiments of the entire Bulldog Nation: Go Dawgs." ESPN
Lesis Grazzard was quoted as saying;
"Larry Munson is to Georgia football what fried chicken is to a tailgate party. You can't enjoy one without the other."
He was especially noted for his lack of fear for showing his team alliance as heard especially in the Oct 6, 2001 game against Tennesse in Knoxville;
"Mcgill led us out. Now he calls his hands and raises them for the huddle on the ten. Gah ten seconds, we¹re on their six. Michael Johnson turned around asked the bench something. And now Greene makes him line up on the right slot, we have three receivers. Tennessee playing what amounts to a four-four fake. And there¹s a TOUCHDOWN! MY GOD A TOUCHDOWN! We threw it to Haynes. We just stomped OEem with five seconds left. My God Almighty did you see what he did? David Greene just straightened up and we snuck the fullback over, Hanes is keeping the ball, Haynes has come running all the way across to the bench. We just dumped it over to 26-24. We just stepped on their face with a hot nailed boot and broke their nose. We just crushed their face. We dumped it over, David Greene brought us flying down the field and Haynes caught a sneak pass wide open."
To this day he is still honored after the National Anthem when hie voice is heard by all the specators a the Georgia Football Games to cheer on the Bulldowgs to a hopefull victory!!!
He will be truly missed both by Georgia sports fana and especillay by the University of Gerogia and his beloved Bulldawgs!!!
